Emergence is a slippery term, which has been defined in many ways.

Some definitions are:

  • the occurrence, when one puts several items together, of Patterns that would have been difficult to predict based on studying the items separately and then pooling the knowledge obtained from these separate studies
  • add more definitions

Emergence in AGI

The role of emergence in AGI Systems is controversial.

Many Integrative AGI Systems assign a fundamental role to emergence, and are relying on the combination of multiple Learning Algorithms and Knowledge Representations to yield emergent intelligent phenomena not obtained from the algorithms and representations in isolation.

For example the Novamente Cognition Engine has this character.
