A Cognitive Structure devoted to enabling Memory of particular sorts of Patterns.
The specialization to particular sorts of patterns provides the potential to use an appropriately specialized Knowledge Representation.

Reification of Memory Subystems
It is not clear in all cases how distinct the various "functional memory subsystems" listed here really are. It must be noted that the term "subsystem" as used here does not imply the existence of physically distinct subsystems in the physical system underlying a Mind, nor even a highly rigid dynamical separation between the "functional subsystems." But the idea of course is that there is some degree of dynamical distinctness between these functional subsystems.
Reification of Declarative versus Procedural Memory
For instance, it seems clear that in the human brain, Declarative Memory and Procedural Memory utilize somewhat distinct neural mechanisms.
And some AGI systems mirror this, e.g. in the Novamente Cognition Engine, separate data structures are used for declarative and procedural knowledge.
Reification of Short versus Long Term Memory
On the other hand, the extent to which Short Term Memory versus Long Term Memory should be treated as an architectural distinction as opposed to a dynamical phenomenon is not clear.
AGI systems vary on this point; e.g.
- In LIDA it is treated as an architectural distinction (associated with important dynamical phenomena)
- in the Novamente Cognition Engine it is treated as a dynamical phenomenon (the software code does not contain any distinction between LTM and STM, but the mind of a running Novamente AI system does, due to particular properties that emerge from the dynamics of the system.)
