A Formal Definition of Pattern
One more formal definition, drawn from Pattern Theory, is: A pattern is a Representation as something simpler (see Simplicity).
If we have an entity X, then f is a pattern in X if
- f produces X, and
- f is simpler than X (see Simplicity)
